Mobile Phones at 30,000 Feet Given the Green Light for Take Off
The European Union Commission, in its infinite wisdom (or perhaps that should be self-serving wisdom), has decided that it is safe for people to use mobile phone whilst on board aircraft. Great! If the constant harassment by some airline personnel offering drinks, gifts, scratch cards and so on wasn’t enough, now we have to listen to people yelling into a mobile phone to make themselves heard above the roar of the plane’s engine. Just great. I hate flying as it is, my hips hurt and I have to wear special socks in order to stop my viens killing me.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very attached to my mobile phone, and the fact that I can keep it turned on and therefore use it to play games and amuse myself during the flight does delight me, but the small advantage is far outweighed by the annoyance the number of potential business people who will use their flying time to catch up on their calls will cause. And the things people talk about on the phone in public is enough to put you off your already bad flight food. I don't want to hear about the breast enlargements that Kera Knightly isn't having or the liposuction that went wrong. They describe intimate things in massive detail - I don't want to know!
It’s thought that the costs for using mobiles from a plane will be high, and whilst that may deter the average holiday maker ringing their neighbour to check if they locked the front door, the all encompassing business account will mean that business travellers won’t find the costs off-putting at all. My only hope is that most of the airlines will allow SMS, and silent ringtones only whilst travelling on board their aircraft!
