I have just been listening to Green Day's 'american idiot' CD and I found myself wondering what I always muse over when I hear Green Day. When Green Day was just an real punk band, I still hadn't heard from them, however I did buy their Dookie album. Dookie was their first album with a music label and I did enjoy it. Yet, their label as a punk rock band has never set well with me. Considering I have never heard their work from pervious to the release of Dookie, I cannot honestly say I know how they used to sound. I can say that most of the tracks I have heard are not punk in my mind. I know, they have kept the instruments to a minimum, the vocals are nasally, and lots of of the song lyrics are pack full of anger. All of these factors distinguish punk. If these three guidelines are all is required met to be though of as punk rock, next Eminem should be a punk superstar.
I can not believe that Green Day is a punk band. The American-Idiot album in particular is far from punk. I do own this Album and I hear it ever now and then. Yet, it isn't my idea of punk. When I think punk, I think of Magazine, the Ordinarys, the Tickets, and Vice Creems. With these Punk bands, I get the anger and the crazy fast tempos punk music is meant to have. After all, the radio does not regulary play a song that's awfully punk! Sorry Green Day, your music is cool, however you definitely are not punks anymore!
