My Top Family Films

I adore watching movies with my kids that I loved to watch when I was a kid. The best part is remembering how the movie made me feel, then watching their faces twist and turn into the familiar feelings of my youth. What’s even better than that is finding these movies at super low prices at SecondSpin.com. We can’t go wrong!

So without further adieu, here is my top five list of the "old school"films I’m now enjoying again, all grown up… relatively speaking.
5. ET
I remember seeing this movie as a kid at the drive-in. There’s nothing like watching a movie about extra-terrestrials under the stars! This film opened up new doors for me and my children about worlds undiscovered and possibilities unexplored. The universe has always been a mystery and ET brings those mysteries home for families to ponder together.
4. The Fox and The Hound
This story of friendship is such a classic tale. I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with my children about differences between people (and animals) after watching this movie together.

3. Annie
I still know every word to every song in this flick. Admittedly, this movie was more for my viewing pleasure and it didn’t really resonate with my two boys. I walked away with a new appreciation for Carol Brunette’s character this time around. At least the boys were able to experience a bit of culture from the music and dancing throughout the film. Watching it with my niece, however, was rather rewarding.
2. The Never Ending Story
In my experience, the joys of reading are difficult to pass on to our children. They either like it, or they don’t. I love how this movie brings the characters from Bastian’s discovered book to life. The concept of the reader controlling the story with their imagination is so powerful. Putting Bastian in control of the characters he grew to love gave him a reason to be invested in the book. This is a great lesson for us all.
1. A Christmas Story
This is a great movie on so many levels. The interaction between family, friends, neighbors, and teachers is all present and hysterical! From Ralphie dressed as a deranged Easter Bunny to Flick sticking his tongue to a flagpole, this movie has the whole family rolling-on-the-floor-laughing every time we watch it.

Watching films you loved as a child is a wonderful experience in itself, and sharing them with your own little ones adds yet a deeper enjoyment to this experience. What movies did you love as a kid and have shared with the next generation?
